Famine for the Word

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

12 And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it — Amos 8:11-12

Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God — Matthew 22:29

From ‘Crisis in America’s Churches: Bible Knowledge at Al-Time Low’ by Michael J. Vlach

George Barna: ‘The Christian body in America is immersed in a crisis of Biblical illiteracy.’

George Lindbeck, Yale theologian, ‘When I first arrived at Yale, even those who came from nonreligious backgrounds knew the Bible better than most of those now who come from churchgoing families.’

David Wells, author of No Place for Truth, ‘I have watched with growing disbelief as the evangelical church has cheerfully plunged into astounding theological illiteracy.’

Only 1% of adults embrace 13 basic Bible teachings

Less than 1 out of 10 believers have a biblical worldview - this is a not just a crisis, but ‘state of emergency.’

1. Neglect on Bible exposition and doctrine from the pulpit & during the week. Doctrine;
2. Serious reading is declining, and that includes Scripture.
3. Age of growing deception, not just ‘fake news.’
4. Postmodern-friendly, therapeutic feel good and motivational messages are replacing sound Bible teaching;
5. Worldly philosophies like existentialism, cultural Marxism, postmodernism and more have infiltrated churches (even evangelical churches)

Jesus told the Sadducees they were in error for not knowing the Scriptures or the power of God (Matthew 22:29; Mark 12:24-27)

The church loses its salt and becomes impotent.

More susceptible to temptation and sin

Lose the fear of the Lord and begin to do unthinkable, anti-Biblical conduct

We begin to think, speak, and act like the world and will be treated accordingly.

Makes us susceptible to deception and delusion.

Bible-based civilisation in the West will decay, with dire consequences.

Deuteronomy 17:18-20 speaks of the king having the book of the law so that you will obey it. Failure brings judgment.

People ready to walk out of famous mega-church because they weren’t getting the Word. The church got the message & responded.

1. Church leaders need to be informed of this crisis.
2. Return to a teaching church: Sundays and during the week teach Bible, exposition, survey, and doctrine.
3. Return to small group, intimate, interaction Bible study: especially textual more than topical - the best way to grow.
4. Develop a life of personal devotion & Bible study - teach people to feed themselves on God’s Word - small group Bible study is a great way to teach this.
